आसानी से देख न पाए । इसकी त्वचा सुखी और खुदरी होती है अपारगम्य तथा शल्ययुक्त त्वचा जो शरीर से पानी की नमी को रोकते हैं जिससे वो सूखे स्थानों पर भी जिन्दा रह सके। ये सांस फेफड़ों से लेते है। इन प्राणियों की त्वचा में कुछ विशेष प्रकार की रंजक(रंगने वाली) कोशिकाएं अथवा मैलफोर होती हैं जो ताप बढ़ने तथा घटने के साथ साथ सिकुड़ती व फैलती है। ये कोशिकाएं इनके शरीर में स्रावित होने वाले कुछ हार्मोन द्वारा उत्तेजित होकर रंग बदलती हैं। ये हार्मोन इंटरमोडिन एसिटिल कोलीन तथा एड्रीनेलिन है। इनकी त्वचा की सबसे ऊपरी सतह की कोशिकाएं पीली उसके नीचे गहरी भूरी तथा काले रंग की और  सबसे नीचे सफेद की होती है। जब ताप कम होता है तब इनका रंग गहरा और ताप बढ़ने से रंग हल्का होने लगता हैं।

रात में निकलने वाले सरीसृप में इसका उल्टा होता हैं। लैगिंग जिसमे नर मादा दोनो की आवश्यकता पड़ती है तथा भावनात्मक अवस्था का भी इनका रंग पर प्रभाव पड़ता है। पेड़ो पर चढ़ने वाले या उन पर वास करने वाले सरीसृप में रंग बदलने की प्रवृत्ति अधिक होती हैं। यह हरा, भूरा, पीला तथा स्लेटी रंग बदलते है। दोस्तो आपको बता दे की छिपकली भी इसी प्रजाति की है जो हमारे घरों में अक्सर निकलती है लेकिन ये रंग नहीं बदलती हैं।
